The Waldo Canyon Wildfire burning near Colorado Springs leaves evacuees with only minutes to make a difficult decision; what stuff to take and what stuff will burn. In light of this terrible tragedy, those of us who have so far escaped this fiery fate should stop and take a second to look at all that stuff we are hanging on to, especially if we’re paying rent to store it! Therefore, I challenge you to get rid of all that stuff you don’t use and all that stuff you don’t need by imagining yourself in the shoes of a wildfire evacuee.
The Challenge
Take 3 stacks of different color post-it notes and assign a color to this code:
#1 = Sentimental Value
#2 = Monetary Value
#3 = Burn
Now, bring your stacks into your storage unit and act as if you have just been informed that you have 30 minutes to evacuate before it all burns down. Set a timer for 30 minutes and start sticking. When you’re all done, use the following assessment to help you make decisions about letting most of this stuff go:
For items labeled #3-Burn, consider them as donations and gifts to those who can put them to good use; reuse, recycle, and get a nifty deduction at tax time.
For those items labeled #2-Monetary, and not sentimental, list them, price them, load them up on a truck, and for goodness sake don’t have a garage sale, Hold a Property Liquidation Auction instead!
Everything else is labeled #1-Sentimental and priceless, so why are you hiding your sentimental items in a dark and dusty storage unit anyway? Use it! Share it! Take Pride in it!
If you met this challenge, then it’s highly likely that you can now burn that storage unit contract instead of that hole in your pocket! So Simplify-Life and contact the Interactive Auctions Group 510-282-6147 for details on setting up your Estate Auction.
